Turn Stored X-Ray Film Into a Cash Rebate

Many hospitals continue to store X-ray film that is past required retention periods. What’s often overlooked is that this film contains recoverable silver, which can be converted into a cash rebate when properly processed.

Document Archive Partners (DAP) has partnered with Vizient  to launch an X-Ray Film Destruction & Silver Reclamation Campaign,  designed to help hospitals responsibly destroy eligible X-ray film, reduce long-term storage costs, and return value to the organization — all while maintaining compliance.

With silver prices hitting record highs, this initiative has become a timely, budget-positive opportunity for hospitals to reclaim value from legacy assets.

What the Project Includes

  • Review of X-ray film eligibility based on retention requirements
  • Secure, compliant destruction and silver recovery
  • Monetization of recovered silver and issuance of a rebate check
  • End-to-end project management handled by DAP

Estimate Your X-Ray Film Silver Rebate

Use the calculator below for a quick, no-obligation way to understand the potential cash value of X-ray film past retention. If you’re unsure how many linear feet of film you have, your imaging, radiology, or facilities team can often help estimate this. The rebate is non-binding as silver value changes daily and does not include the additional savings created by reducing storage costs.

Estimate Your Cash Rebate

Enter your total linear feet of X-ray film to see a projected rebate. Please reach out to your Imaging Managers if you are unsure where to locate this number.

Projected rebates are estimates and may vary based on changes in silver value and by film volume. Aggregate within your IDN to unlock bonus tiers and maximize your rebate.

Why Hospitals Are Acting Now:

  • Silver prices have risen significantly in recent years
  • Stored film creates ongoing storage costs and compliance risk
  • The project is guaranteed budget-positive, with rebates offsetting service costs
  • Aggregating film across departments or your IDN can unlock higher rebate tiers

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any costs to participating in this campaign?

No! We operate on a budget-positive model and do all the work so you don't need to allocate any FTEs. We simply share a percent of the rebate.

The vendor may charge permanent withdrawal-related fees. These fees can be advanced. If not, the rebate check should be able to cover the cost to remove the film from the vendor.

What is Silver Reclamation?

Silver reclamation is the process of removing silver from x-ray film. Silver is used to create images on radiographic film, and silver can be extracted from old x-ray films with a process that can recover 99.9% of the silver. The process involves shredding the film and washing it with a chemical reagent to remove the silver and wash away any information on the film.

How much of a rebate can I expect to receive?

The rebate amount will vary based on how many linear feet of film you have to destroy and the value of silver on the day it is removed from your film. The more film, the more silver, the bigger check. You are encouraged to gather other hospitals within your IDN to help unlock a higher tier! Payouts range anywhere between $10K to over $1 million.

Who will oversee the project? Do I need to allocate any FTEs?

No FTEs required to do any of the work. Our staff will oversee and coordinate logistics and provide status updates to your team.

What is required from me to get started?

All we need is a signed Statement of Work, and Letter of Authorization, which gives us permission to approach your document storage vendor and retrieve your x-ray film. Leave the rest to us!

Is it safe to destroy x-ray film?

We are only targeting x-ray film that is past the retention period. This is film that you are paying to store, while no longer required by law, which also increases risk to the organization.

How long will the project take?

Once the Letter of Authorization (LOA) and Statement of Work (SOW) have been executed, and the film picked up, based on the amount of inventory, client settlements typically occur 30 days after the project is complete.

What are the benefits to destroying x-ray film?

There are three main benefits to film destruction;1) Reduced cost to store film, 2) risk reduction, and 3) a silver reclamation check (new found money).

How can I maximize my rebate amount?

The rebate amount is based on linear feet of film, with bonuses provided for top tier. We encourage you to reach out to other hospitals within your IDN to combine linear footage and reach a higher tier!
